Shandur is khuwar word which means (Shaa’n) Home and (Duu’r) Garden.The Polo is one of the old sports of GBC which is itself unique due to their freestyle game. The ontology of polo is quite old and it is equestrian sports emerged in Central Asia back in 6th century and later adopted by Burushu,Shina, and Khuwar poeple. These Societies settled down and converted their war-torn behavior into sports and adopted the free style game. The initiations of polo by Balti king of skardu and built Shandur polo ground. During summer, the mutual land of Chitral and Gilgit hosts thousands of tourists and fan of polo. the matches held between Gilgit and Chitral teams.
In each year the month of July takes height of excitement among both tribes and getting prepare to watch their undefeated horses in the battleground of Shandur Polo ground. On every year, 7 to 9 July Shandur Pass invites thousands of visitors to experience a traditional Polo match between Gilgit and Chitral teams along with hundred of local fans. Two other exciting matches are also played between the teams of Laspar and Ghizer and Chitral ‘A’ VS Gilgit ‘A’ teams during the festival. The festival also includes folk Music, folk Dances, traditional sports and temporary tent village is setup at the pass to cater the needs.
